Chronic Pain Group

Pain_GroupTherapyNew Group Starting soon!

Managing Chronic Pain: A Telephone-based support and psychoeducation group.

Dr. Russell will lead a small group teaching people how to get lasting control and relief from chronic pain. Major developments have taken place in the past few years in our understanding of the physiology of chronic pain. Today, we understand better than even what's happening physically with chronic pain. This understanding means there are now helpful resources and effective management and treatment techniques that help make chronic pain managable.

This group will teach you some of these management and treatment techniques

 Questions you may have.

How often  will we meet?

The group meets six times for an hour and a half. It is strongly recommended that you attend every meeting to get maximum benefit from the group.

Do I need a referral from my physician?

No, your family doctor may recommend you attend, but this is not necessary. It is recommended that you consult with your doctor prior to beginning the group.

Why would counselling help a medical issue like chronic pain?

A support and psychoeducation group helps in two ways. The support and understanding from other group members and the facilitator creates positive, healthy feelings. That in itself improve the pain experience. The second way that counselling helps is that it teaches a person to harness the power of their mind to change and reduce the intensity of the pain. That may seem hard to believe, but it is a well-established scientific finding. There are a variety of mental tools and techniques that you will learn in this group to reduce the intensity of pain. You will also keep track of your pain, so you can monitor your progress.

Is there a waiting list to get in?

At times there may be a wait to get into a group. Call Dr. Russell at 204 746 0281 to find out when the next available group begins.
